SAD Breaking News: Andy Irons Passed Away...

"Sad news has made its way into the Surfer offices this afternoon as we’re hearing confirmed reports that 3X World Champion Andy Irons has passed away.

At this time the cause of death is unknown, although sources inside the family say that he passed away en route from Puerto Rico to his home in Hawaii. The 32 year-old-hawaiian was deemed too ill to travel on his connecting flight from Texas to Hawaii and was grounded there. Unconfirmed reports say that he passed away in his Dallas hotel room.

SURFER will keep you posted as this story develops." -Surfer Magazine

Jack Johnson's All at Once Tour!!

Last week Jack Johnson took over the west coast hitting up all the major towns and blessing their ears with beautiful music, but that’s not all he did. At every concert Jack invites 5-8 local non-profits to be a part of his “All at Once” concert experience, and have the opportunity to earn a % of his ticket sales.

Thanks to Jack & Kim Johnson and his non-profit All At Once, GrowingGreat was able to raise $25,000 to continue to educate and inspire children and adults to adopt healthy eating habits!!

It’s people like Jack who are true angles and help make our world a better place!

Stay tuned for my personal interview with Jack Johnson and Paula Fuga!! And yes I totally geeked out and confessed my love for Jack at the end of the interview…whoops!

Oktoberfest in BIG BEAR!!

There’s only one place where you can have a wood saw competition, live music, authentic German food, a petting zoo, take old western photo-ops, ride a wooden unicorn, ride a mechanical bull and carry a mini keg around while parting through it all, and that’s Big Bear’s Oktoberfest.

With an eclectic group of locals, tourists, families and rowdy singles there are activities for everyone.

Starting at 3:30 on a typical Saturday a line raps around Big Bear’s Convention Center and onto the street with festive thirsty people ready to get the party started.

Walking into the convention center feels extremely similar to that of a German beer hall. There are people dancing, laughing, eating and, most importantly, beer drinking!

Once one enters the hall, you can purchase drink tickets, Big Bear mugs, mini kegs or the large DAS BOOT!

Families and groups stake out their spots early in order to enjoy the long day full of activities. Outside the hall is a mini fair that consists of vendors, food, a petting zoo, a mechanical bull, a wooden rocking unicorn, more bars and my personal favorite, the old western photo booth!

As the night progresses, the dance floor grows larger as the entire hall joins in doing The Cupid Shuffle. This is immediately followed by jumping, singing and dancing to the classic party anthem “Shout" that turns the Big Bears Convention Center into the scene straight out of “The Wedding Crashers.”

Once you clock out or got too intoxicated, Big Bear provides everyone with FREE shuttle rides home, a perfect ending to the night.

Big Bear’s Oktoberfest has been a hidden gem for many years and it's definitley an event you don’t want to miss!

West Beach Music Festival 2010!

The West Beach Music Festival on Saturday September 25 in beautiful Santa Barbara, California had everything going for it. Not only were there amazing bands playing on three stages, but the weather was perfect, and it made for an unforgettable day at the beach.

We were greeted by one of our favorite South Bay bands, Tomorrows Bad Seeds, as they performed their set in the beautiful afternoon sun. After their performance, we headed backstage to get some footage for SurfRoots.com. Thanks to Resin Music, I was able to spend a majority of the afternoon interviewing the bands as they hung out backstage, and spent time with fellow musicians. I basically interviewed anyone and everyone I could and I got some great interviews with several standouts in the world of California Reggae music like Rebelution and Tomorrow's Bad Seeds! You can see the footage at http://www.resinmusic.com/ !

After the festival, I met up with some old friends and headed to Velvet Jones in downtown Santa Barbara to catch yet another set by the Bad Seeds. Surprisingly the town was pretty dead, and there were not too many people out and about. Trying to have shows after an entire day's worth of music was probably just too much for most people to handle. Not us though! Our group raged throughout the night and we were all reminded of just how great the city of Santa Barbara can be.

I would say the only negative part of the West Beach Festival, was the lack of people in attendance. Even with headliners like UB40, Rebelution, and Soja, the attendance dwindled a little. It definitely was far from empty, but we were surprised at how few people were there for a "festival". I really hope that next year there are thousands more people in attendance, and the West Beach Festival lives up to it's true potential.

VMA Party Patrol @ BBM Lounge

HELLO PARTY PATROL

Now I know it’s a little unorthodox to have my first party patrol away from the beach. BUT being that it was VMA weekend, it only seemed fair to get this party started right. So we are headed to the hills!

The night began with extremely high hopes, as I was continuously reassuring Jeff that Hollywood parties could be fun and were not always cliché. We were directed to park in the Beverly Hills library lot, where we would then ride in limos up to the party- seemed simple and luxurious enough.

Pulling into the parking lot around 10:30, we drove past an enormous line and up three levels. As soon as we parked we were greeted by a beautiful convertible red Ferrari holding two fake blonde fake boobied mindless barbies, who immediately started a yelling fight with two girls who parked “too close” to their expensive car. WELCOME TO BEVERLY HILLS BITCHES.

Jeff and I trying not to laugh too loud, made our way to the “VIP” limo line. Apparently if you got an invitation to this party, you were a “VIP”. Here comes MISTAKE #1, how the hell are limos supposed to be continuously shuttling back and forth when it’s hard enough for 2 normal size cars on these roads. Of course a 40-person hummer limo got stuck going up the hill and blocked the entire road… Duh!

Now waiting in line with the rest of the “VIP’s” became epic/entertaining eaves dropping material. Abut half way through waiting a light bulb went on; we have become the generation that lives to be seen, rather than embracing the moment in which we are living. Every person was nose deep in their phone tweeting about their situation rather then simply turning to their side and voicing their thoughts (and when they were saying how they felt, they were reading their friend their most recent tweet). All emotion went from their heads, through their fingertips and to the voice of new media: Twitter, facebook, BBM and so on…

After waiting 1.5 hours to get into the limo, then to another 20 mins sitting in a limo traffic jam, we said fuck it, collected a crew, and walked up the hilly driveway to this infamous mansion party. I must mention the intentions of this party could have been amazing. When inside the limo we were accompanied by a “BBM” girl who handed us menus where we could then “BBM” our food and drink orders and have them ready and waiting for us upon our arrival. Would have been nice if the limos actually made it up the driveway.

This mansion was every bit as spectacular as described, but walking up to an already long line to head back down the hill wasn’t completely reassuring. None the less when we had FINALLY arrived at 12:30am and walked around the corner to the long red carpet, sure enough the party was poppin’. There were bars placed all around the 4 levels of the backyard, and after grabbing 2 Red Bull Vodkas each we were ready to explore.

First lets note the great details of the party:
-   Great alcohol was being served (A+)
-   BBM girls walking around with delicious pineapple shakes (A)
-   Food, surprisingly not impressive (C)
-   Big projection screens all over the party where people could BBM messages to be shown (A- great commentary)
-   Down stairs by the pool were huge cabanas that no one was taking advantage of… weird (A)
-   Big ball room with a private performance from Ne-Yo (A)
-   Last but not least…no cell service @ a BBM lounge party? (B-)... Not an F because it was incredibly humorous to watch people freak out the entire party because they couldn’t find service.

After getting our drinks, our first adventure was getting down to the “private” level. So acting like we knew what we were doing, we cruised right down into the guesthouse. Well, apparently it wasn’t as private as we thought, and the guesthouse was filled with it’s own “private” party… So once again we said F it, made our way back up to the madness and kept exploring.

Heading back up to the ballroom where Ne-Yo had just begun performing-it soon became the happening place to be in LA. The word on the street (and the huge projection screens) said that everyone was over the Deadmouse Sunset Plaza party and heading to the hills.

Just after the performance and when we were about to bounce out, of course we run into my LA rage PIC Becs! We hung at their table for a few, before we started our adventure home…side note, who gets a table at a private party? Haha only in Hwood.

Making our way back to the shuttle line, for the 3rd time we said F it, followed a random crew that looked like they knew what they were doing, and walked down the hill to try and find a ride. After walking ½ a mile down an incredibly steep hill in 6’’ hills, we hitch hiked a ride in an escalade with the creator of the Brazilian Blowout. It ended up being a great ending to our night that came with a free cut, style and blow out at his salon upon my next visit.

BBM Lounge was definitely the happening place to be and be seen the night before the VMA’s. Besides the overlooked shitty transportation situation, the party was a great success. I would give this party a 3.4 GPA
